We use a variety of glass techniques and cold working skills in creating new and innovative glass work . We enjoy experimenting with color reactions, sandblasting, edge construction and sculptural forms. Here are examples of the some of the techniques we use.
MURRINE GLASS
Murrine glass is a process that involves creating canes of glass. Different colors of glass are layered and placed in a high fire pottery vessel. The vessel is placed in a kiln and heated until it becomes a thick semi liquid state. The kiln is elevated and the glass is pulled from a hole in the bottom of the vessel into rods of glass 5-7 feet long. A variation of a straight pull is one in which the glass is twisted as it is pulled from the kiln to create spiral designs. Pieces of these rods can be cut into murrines which are used in a variety of ways to create glass pieces. Here are some examples of this process.
TAPESTRY GLASS
This glass process involves creating thin pieces of glass that look like glass spaghetti. Different colors of glass are placed on a solid glass base glass sheet to create a variety of patterns. These sheets of glass are cut into strips of glass that are placed in a variety of patterns.
FLOW GLASS
In this technique pieces of different color glass are fused togetther in to thick strips of glass often five sheets are use. These are cut into "chunks" of glass cubes of different sizes and placed in a containment system. This might be a metal circle or on a ramp where the glass flows downward to create a pattern of varing thicknesses.
Other ways of creating and using flow in making glass is to use strips of the glass made and butterfly them open to reveal the internal design as the above piece demonstrates.
RAKED GLASS
This style of glass is created when glass is placed in a kiln in a containment piece which can be of different sizes and shapes. The kiln door is opened when the glass is in a liquid state and a metal rake is dragged across the surface of the glass to make a pattern. The pattern will differ depending on the direction and number of times the glass is raked.
Powder Glass Techniques
Crackle Glass
This process involves using multiple layers of glass power mixed with water to create a specific texture which is then manipulated to create patterns .This technique was created by the glass artist Robert Leatherbarrow. We have developed variations of his techniques resulting in multiple "approaches" that yield differing designs. Here are examples of a few of these applications.
Layered Glass powder
There are many ways to use powders in creating glass pieces. Theses pieces were created by using multiple layers of different colors of glass powders that were fired over clear glass with different designs created in the the powders.
Imagery in Glass
Stef has been combining a variety of glass forms, powders, frit, part pieces and enamels to Create images in glass.
